Frequently Asked Questions
1. How often do I need to change the filters?
2. What size unit should I use?
While there is a lot of info that goes into this, it is recommended to have about 1 ton per 400 square feet. However, other factors change this such as the insulation R-value in the walls, attic, and windows. What state you are in also plays an important role.
3. What causes an AC unit to freeze up?
Low refrigerant potentially caused by a leak or atmospheric release can cause your AC unit to freeze up. Also, low return air capacity, as a function of the warm air going through your system is to heat the refrigerant, cool down, and be blown back into your home. Blocking or reducing the return air capacity increases the possibility of your AC unit freezing up. Finally, while uncommon, an oversized condenser can cause your unit to freeze.
4. How often should I have my unit serviced?
HVAC units should be serviced twice a year. Spring maintenance is to prepare the air conditioning system for the Summer, and fall maintenance is to prepare the heating system and furnace for the Winter.
5. How can I improve my indoor air quality?
There are HEPA filters that will improve air quality, however the best way to improve your indoor air quality is to maintain a consistent cleaning schedule of your home. Proper grooming of pets will help extend the lifespan of your filters because they have fewer particles to remove from the air.
6. How can I save more money on my HVAC bill?
Using your system a little less can drastically reduce your bill. For instance, during the Summer months, setting your thermostat a little higher, like at 75 degrees, when you are away from your home will reduce the total use of your system, thus decreasing the bill. A simple solution we offer is to install a Wi-Fi thermostat that allows you to control the temperature from anywhere. We have found this to be highly effective in reducing the bills. Of course you could enjoy a slightly warmer or colder home during the summer and winter.
7. How can I extend the lifespan of my AC unit?
It ends up being a simple combination of all of these FAQs, change your filters, keep your home cleaned, don’t force your system to run 24/7, allow proper air flow through the return vent back to your unit, and of course, get regular maintenance done on your system to catch any major issues before they cause permanent damage to your system.
